High Quality hazelnuts

The Harvest of ripened Hazelnuts takes place in August.Discovered and favored even by the ancient Romans, who brought the hazelnut to Italy and used the kernels as a remedy to improve one’s general well-being. The Romans cultivated the hazelnut trees in the Province Avellino in Italy. Hazelnuts („Corylus avellana“) have an unforgettable aroma and exquisite flavor. The name means “originating from Avellino” and the nuts were believed to be the symbol of power, health, freedom, domestic bliss, wealth and matrimony.

The Home of Hazelnuts

The Hazelnut Bush can grow up to 5 Meters and has egg-shaped leaves.
Originally, the hazelnut tree comes from Turkey. Even nowadays the majority of the hazelnuts worldwide come from this country. The other two cultivation areas are the Mediterranean region and the USA. The nut trees require enough rainfall and a lot of calcium present in the ground.

Botanically seen, the hazelnut is one of the “real nuts” or original nuts. This means that the nut is covered under three lignified layers. The plant belongs to the birch family, reaches up to five meters tall and has egg-shaped leaves. After pollination, the nuts are grown in groups of up to five kernels. Even at an early growth stage one can notice that the tender nuts are covered and protected by the leaves that later transform into a hard shell.

The versatile

Most Hazelnuts are grown in Turkey. The harvest season begins in August, hazelnuts are either hand-picked or shaken from the trees and sorted out on sheets. After that the nuts enter the market raw, roasted or candied. Hazelnuts are perfectly suited as a snack or can be enjoyed as a whole kernel, crushed, grated, grounded or chopped. The intensive aroma of the kernels is one of the reasons hazelnuts are so popular for desserts, liquors, dressings, pates and baked goods.

A treasure in a shell

The not so large kernels are very nutritious and rich in antioxidants such as vitamin E. Antioxidants effectively eliminate free radicals and thus help prevent various heart diseases. Already 25 grams of hazelnuts contain 50% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin E. In addition, the nuts contain more than 60% of monounsaturated fatty acids, important proteins, calcium, iron, lecithin as well as vitamin A, B1, B2 and C. These elements in hazelnuts help to provide our brain cells with important nutrients.
